ADVOCACY DELIVERING OUTCOMES

In close collaboration with our extensive network of frontline Indigenous partners, our advocacy has helped build a new narrative for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who wish to live and work on their Country, for the benefit of all Australians.

We do this by ensuring Rangers and Traditional Owners can talk directly with decision makers, initiating constructive engagement with governments of all persuasions, through policy commentary and feedback, and by communicating with and mobilising a broad public support base through traditional and digital media.

DISCOVER SOME OF OUR ACHIEVEMENTS:

ALONGSIDE OUR GROWING NETWORK OF OVER 50 INDIGENOUS PARTNERS, OUR ADVOCACY HAS:

  • Delivered a commitment across the federal political spectrum to double Indigenous Ranger jobs nationally by 2030.
  • Delivered major funding boosts for Indigenous land and sea management at the state and territory level across Australia.
  • Been the main driver of growth in Indigenous Protected Areas (IPAs) over the last decade with over 40 million hectares of new IPAs a direct result of our work, and further commitments secured from the Federal Government on land and sea.
  • Secured a target for job equity for women rangers by 2030 from the Federal Government.
  • Positively shifted the public narrative around Indigenous land and sea management in Australia and internationally, with a growing support base for our work of over 115,000 Australians.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE:

As we continue to advocate for a strong policy and funding environment for Indigenous Land and Sea Management, we will:

  • Amplify our messaging to federal, state and territory governments to improve their delivery and support for Indigenous land and sea management programs, responding to the needs of our partners and the wider sector.
  • Bring our partners together with decision makers, ensuring their voices are heard by people with the power to strengthen Indigenous land and sea management programs.
  • Continue to produce publications and reports highlighting partners, the sector and the need for ambition and quality support to inform the public and decision makers.
  • Ensure climate change is factored into governments' thinking on how they can better support Traditional Owners to manage their land and sea Country.

Country Needs People is a national not-for-profit organisation born from the support of hundreds of Traditional Owners around the country.

We pay our respects to all the First Nations people around Australia and their unbroken commitment to keep Country strong on land and sea. We acknowledge Indigenous partners, Traditional Owners, Elders past, present and emerging and extend our appreciation of their support and guidance of our daily work.

ALWAYS WAS, ALWAYS WILL BE, ABORIGINAL LAND.
